How to Connect to the Internet Wirelessly in Windows 7: 6 Steps
I want to connect to wifi access points for example for traveling users , and than be able to connect to VPN and after that logon to windows 7.
On my side i have windows 7 os laptop, Checkpoint VPN client. Probably not. That process is generally a user-mode action, though I believe one can specify a particular connection such as a corporate network for Windows to use before logon. The bit abut the VPN connection? I doubt it. A user can log in in cached mode, then connect to a Wireless hotspot then run VPN – what is the issue with doing it this way? The user can still use their domain credentials, so long as they are cached, how many are cached are down to your policy and the OS in use..
I’m just searching does anyone know answer to my question! I’m thinking that is not possible, but who knows maybe somebody find a solution exceped cached credentials. I don’t believe it is possible, there is no way that I know of for a user to be prompted for Wi-Fi passwords and connections before the windows screen has been logged in to – I don’t even think the drivers will have been loaded until the OS has completed.
Here is a guide on how to, but do note, this will not let you connect to new networks prior to login, the Wi-Fi must be known and configured for this to work. So for your scenario, we are still at the same place as originally, I do not believe this is possible to configure and connect to a new wireless connection prior to windows login.
You can however connect to known wirelesses before windows login. This can be achieved, but, you should only use pre-authorized networks or connections to do so. Drivers are loaded pre log in, so that is not an issue. The main issue is that you can not pre-authorize unknown networks in the pre log in environment as they require user action to connect as per default security settings.
This security step can be bypassed, but to do so would expose the system to irresponsible levels of uncontrolled access via WiFi. Ideally, a user would have their company provided MiFi up and running, no matter if it is wired or wireless to the system, before they even turn on the computer. For some devices, the standard timeout period needs to be extended for USB devices to properly load in the pre log in environment, especially if they connect it to a USB port that was not previously used for the device just as with any USB KB or mouse that was connected to a port that it had not been on before.
For many years I have counseled EU’s to NOT use public WiFi’s as they are prime targets for skimmers and scanners, with hotels, transit hubs, eateries, etc being prime targets. If your scripts are for mapped drives, folder re-direction etc. But how will anything be mapped on start up when there is no internet connection, vpn connection when user singing in?
Then run a script after VPN or place a bat file on the users desktop and show them how to run it. As has already been mentioned you can connect to known networks before login, but not unknown, which will not help in your scenario. We actually don’t allow the user to connect to any wireless other than our own approved list – simply because we cannot guarantee the connection is secured. I’ve got this setup here for my end users, the only difference is I’m using a Cisco VPN, but it looks like you can do the same thing for Checkpoint.
There are two things you need to get this working. First, the end user needs to log into their laptop at the Hotel, coffee shop, etc. When they do this, they need to make sure that the “Connect automatically when this network is in range” setting is turned on. Now have them logoff or reboot. Because this setting was enabled, it allows Windows to connect to this network before the user logs in.
This is key because if there isn’t an active internet connection, then the VPN client can’t attempt to connect before the user logs in. Now, with this being said, the only time this doesn’t work is if the wireless connection they’re using uses a captive web portal or EUA webpage that the user has to interact with first before it lets them out on the internet.
Second, you need to enable Checkpoint’s Secure Domain Logon. Cisco has a feature called “Start Before Login”. It adds a little icon down in the lower right hand part of the screen for the end user to initiate the VPN session before logging into Windows. Once the user logs into the VPN, the user can successfully login to Windows and it will run all Group Policies and login scripts just like if the user’s laptop was connected on your LAN.
It’ pretty slick. Yes it works with checkpoint in the same way! My config is like yours. And i gave user direction in the same way you did.
